Raising bilingual children

Hola, familias! Today I’m sharing an idea that could change the way your kids learn a second language: the Montessori philosophy. If you want to raise bilingual kids and help them learn Spanish naturally, this approach could be just what you need.

Prepared environment: Spanish is always present
A key concept in Montessori is creating a "prepared environment." This means Spanish should be naturally present in everyday life. Place Spanish books, music, toys labeled in Spanish, and even sticky notes around the house with names of objects in Spanish! Your kids will constantly be exposed to the language.

Tip Set up a special space in your home, where only Spanish is spoken and interacted with.

Sensory materials to learn Spanish
Montessori learning is based on sensory experiences, and this is perfect for language learning. Use cards with pictures and Spanish words, or play with objects around the house while naming them in Spanish. This "see and touch" method makes language retention easier.

Tip : Play games like "I spy" or do crafts where each part has a name in Spanish.

Freedom and choice
Montessori emphasizes freedom with responsibility. Don’t force Spanish on them; instead, offer choices that motivate them to use the language in fun ways. Let them pick Spanish books or songs to read or listen to during the day.

Tip: Include TV shows or movies in Spanish that interest them and let them decide what to watch! This nurtures curiosity and love for the language.

Be a language model
In Montessori, the adult is a "guide." You don’t have to be a perfect Spanish speaker, but it’s important to use the language. Speaking Spanish during daily routines is a great way to lead by example. Remember, kids imitate everything you do!

Tip: Involve Spanish in everyday life: "A lavar the dishes," "It’s time to vestirse," "Do you want agua?" Little words or phrases make a big difference.

Patience and observation
Montessori reminds us to be patient and observe how our children learn at their own pace. Don’t worry if they don’t speak Spanish right away. Constant exposure and practice will do the trick.

Tip: Celebrate every new word they learn in Spanish and encourage them with lots of love. The key is to enjoy the journey together!
